Description
What are The Modular Costumes?
The Modular Costumes are the graduation project of Emilie Sandré from the Design Academy Eindhoven. It is a modular costume system for children. Today’s costumes often come with readymade stories, gendered clichés, and little room for imagination.
In response, Emilie created nine flat shapes that can be endlessly combined and reimagined. Each piece is laser-cut from upcycled dead stocks and large offcuts from textile luxury brands, giving hard-to-recycle materials a second life and letting children invent their own characters.
The Starter Kit
The Starter Kit of The Modular Costumes is designed for one children aged 3 to 12. With this pack they can create countless costumes and enjoy endless dress up play. The set contains everything needed to start exploring and inventing costumes.
If you would like to create larger costumes, share the fun with more children, or explore a wider variety of colors and textures, you can add extra packs. All packs are designed to work together.

Making Process
Laser cutting as a creative tool
The textiles are laser-cut in our workshop in the Paris region. This ensures a very local production with no risk of overstocking, featuring a neat finish that stands the test of time and children!
The kits are then assembled in our workshop. The 5 different kits were created with the input and experience of children.
Each theme allows children to immerse themselves in an endless array of creative possibilities.
The Textiles
A precise and carefully curated selection for the Modular Costumes
The materials are chosen based on their durability, origin, diversity of textures, and also their machine-washability. Our textiles come from NonaSource, which upcycles deadstock from luxury fashion houses.
We thus champion an ethical practice of textile sourcing.
Questions and Answers
Yes! The kits are completely compatible with each other. The same connectors are used across the different kits.
Our textiles are recycled and therefore available in limited quantities. Our kits are thus in a limited edition for each color. The first image of the kit corresponds to the colors you are ordering, but not necessarily the colors the children are wearing in the photos.
